Tutor Doctor was set up in 2011 and is managed by Joyce Batten JP, FCIH, MBA, MA (part) Sheffield Hallam University.
Joyce has been involved with the running and leadership of organisations over many years. She has been employed in a variety of senior executive posts. She was a non-executive director of one of the largest housing organisations in the UK for 12 years where she also chaired their charity which helped local people to learn new skills and gain employment. In addition, she has run her own consultancy during which time she worked with housing and construction companies to create skills and employment opportunities for local people. She also became a Bromley magistrate in 1994. Joyce has been a trainer and mentor in a range of subjects related to her professional background.
Joyce is assisted by her husband Max, who has a BA in technology and systems from the Open University and who worked for many years as a project manager and trainer in the transport industry, by Education Consultants who assist with family visits and by an administrative back-office team.
Tutor Doctor Bromley’s aims are to support students in their education, and support their families in their desire to help their children become the best they can be. Our tutors are very experienced and are well qualified, most are graduates or hold the Level 3 NCFE, the top level of qualifications for Teaching Assistants. All are qualified and experienced in the use of the guidelines and content of the National Curriculum to deepen the student’s knowledge of the subject being studied within their current Key Stage.
During the consultation process, students in Key Stages 1 to 4 are assessed in Maths and English in order to identify areas which require specific improvement. This is designed to enable tutors to offer a bespoke service which is based on the results. The assessment is carried out in the comfort and security of the student’s home. In our experience, after tackling any gaps in their knowledge in Maths and English, the student becomes more confident and the tutor can then extend their knowledge so they can achieve more.
We had a simple idea and a desire to make a difference. We wondered why parents had to adjust their family’s busy schedules and drive half way across town just to put their child in another classroom with more kids… when in fact it was the classroom experience that their child was struggling with in the first place.
What if tutoring time slots could be scheduled to fit in with a family’s busy schedule?
What if average families could get access to top tutoring resources sometimes reserved only for wealthier families?
Use information from the curriculum to fill any knowledge gap or help with holiday learning loss.
What if a struggling child could get one to one attention instead of the “one-to-many” models used by most learning centres?
What if a tutor could develop a personalised programme by working with the child’s existing homework and school curriculum?
What if a tutor could come directly to the child’s home to deliver tutoring services instead of fragmenting a family’s precious time together by forcing parents to act as “taxi drivers”?
These questions and more were eventually answered through the development of the Tutor Doctor programme. Over the last 12 years, the Tutor Doctor vision has taken shape. In 2003 the company turned to franchising as a way of expanding the company’s impact and meeting the vast market demand. Now with offices internationally, the Tutor Doctor vision is becoming a reality as the lives of students and their families are being positively impacted.
